TASK: Tourism today creates a variety of problems, such as pollution due to flights, traffic congestion and water pollution. Do you think that governments should impose extra taxes on flights or accommodation to restrict today’s tourism industry?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Nowadays, the tourism industry has become increasingly concerning due to its contribution to air and water contamination as well as traffic congestion. To alleviate the problem, some people argue for supplementary taxes on flights and accommodation to be imposed in order to constrain the industry. In this essay, I would like to consider this measure and discuss alternative steps to reduce the impact.
On the one hand, such a restriction policy could be effective in reducing tourist activity. These additional taxes will make travel more expensive, and discourage people from taking flights and visiting different sites. For instance, certain tourist attractions might be subject to taxes, or airlines might be required to charge higher fees on flights to specific locations. To add to this, the rising cost of air travel may also encourage people to use environmentally friendly public transport and cars. Eventually, these measures could help in reducing pollution and traffic congestion.
On the other hand, extra taxes are sure to be detrimental to the tourism industry. Obviously, if they are too high, individuals may struggle to afford even a single journey. This would cause a significant loss in industry revenue and also result in job losses. Furthermore, this would be extremely damaging for tourism-oriented countries.
In conclusion, I believe that governments should elaborate on a well-balanced approach when considering extra taxes to restrict the tourism industry. So, alternative solutions such as investment in renewable energy sources and eco-friendly infrastructure should be considered to reduce the negative impacts of tourism without adversely affecting the industry.
