Hybrid car — a vehicle that uses two energy sources: an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor with a battery. That combination improves fuel efficiency, reduces harmful emissions, and enhances performance.

How it works

Engine interaction. The electric motor and ICE can run together or separately depending on driving mode. For example, at start and at low speeds (in traffic) the car can run on electric power only. During acceleration, overtaking, or when extra power is needed, the ICE engages, reducing load on the gasoline engine and improving performance.
Regenerative braking. During braking or coasting, the electric motor switches to generator mode, converting kinetic energy into electricity to charge the battery. This increases overall range without refueling.
Optimal-mode selection. The control system automatically chooses the most efficient operating mode at any moment to minimize fuel consumption and improve efficiency.
Hybrid system types

Parallel hybrids. Both the ICE and the electric motor are connected to the wheels and can operate independently or together. For example, at start or low speed the car uses electric drive, and during acceleration the ICE engages.
Series hybrids. The ICE is not connected to the wheels — it works only as a generator charging the battery. The electric motor provides propulsion. This allows the engine to run in an optimal regime with minimal fuel consumption.
Series-parallel hybrids. Combine advantages of series and parallel designs. Depending on driving mode, the car can run on electric drive only, use the ICE as a generator, or operate in parallel mode (both motors turn the wheels). Example: Toyota Prius.
Plug-in hybrids (PHEV). Their batteries can be charged from the grid. These cars can travel longer on electric power and further reduce fuel consumption.
Additional features

Start–stop system. Automatically shuts off the ICE when stopped (e.g., at lights or in traffic), reducing fuel use and emissions.
Planetary gearbox. Some hybrid systems use a planetary power split device that smoothly distributes power from the ICE and electric motor to the wheels in an optimal ratio.
Battery types. Hybrids may use nickel–metal hydride or lithium‑ion batteries.
Best use
Hybrids are especially efficient in city driving with frequent stops and accelerations. Their electric mode is intended for limited distances and low speeds.

Thinking about a more efficient ride? Hybrid cars combine an internal combustion engine and an electric motor to boost fuel economy, cut emissions, and sharpen performance. They use modes like all-electric low-speed driving, ICE-assisted acceleration, and regenerative braking to recharge the battery. Types include parallel, series, series-parallel (e.g., Prius), and plug-in hybrids that you can charge from the grid. Extras: start–stop systems, planetary power‑split gearboxes, and NiMH or Li‑ion batteries. Hybrids shine in city traffic where stop-and-go driving maximizes their benefits. #HybridCars #EcoDrive #SmartMobility
