Financial Security Cushion
It is not a pleasing issue, and yet imagine, what would become of you if you suddenly loose all your income sources? And it happens right tomorrow? For how long can you maintain a reasonable living standard and pay your bills? What reserves do you have? These are the things that are implied when speaking about financial safety.
To answer these questions, calculate your minimal cost of living – all vital expenses like rent, food, clothing, transport, liability payments (college loan, mortgage), etc. Then estimate how much time you might need to solve your problems and restore your former income level. Maybe half a year, a year, a year and a half? It depends on your level of self-confidence, but usual estimations are from 6 to 12 months. Now multiply your minimal cost of living by this number. Suppose you need $2,000 a month and for your own peace of mind you should have a leg-up for at least half a year.
