INTRODUCTION
The uniform of the soldiers and the officers of the Russian Imperial Army that fought in the Napoleonic Wars was of many colours. In the nineteenth century it was common that different regiments within the same army should have worn different coloured coats. The Russian Army were mainly in green coats with trimming of contrasting colours to identify the regiments. The uniform was very complex and was composed of multiple details. Some of them have therefore been listed in a picture glossary, that can be found on the last pages.
The uniform illustrated in this book represents the military outfit worn within and after the Russian campaign, covering the period of 1812-1815. Each drawing of this colouring book represents a prodigious amount of historical research to systematise iconography and to scrutinise rare items of military uniform, headgear, equipment, cold steel and fire weapon from national museums and private collections.
A more detailed study of the uniform and the equipment may be found in the book “Uniform of the Imperial French and Russian Army during the Russian Campaign”, by Pavel Alekhin.
